Appreciation helps people to think better!
Using a neuro-imaging technique called the SPECT scan, Drs Noelle Nelson, Daniel Amen and Jeannine Lemare Calaba studied how appreciative thoughts and feelings affected blood flow to the brain.
They found that less blood flows to the brain, when we are thinking critical thoughts. Blood flows there well, on the other hand, when we are thinking appreciative thoughts.
Appreciation, it seems, is necessary for optimal brain functioning. Thinking needs blood, and blood needs appreciation.
And there is another bit of biological news:
When the heart’s rhythm and pattern are at healthy levels, the cortex gets active. And, get this: in the presence of Appreciation the rhythm and pattern of the heart move towards those healthy levels.
So Appreciation moves through the heart to stimulate the brain to work better. Once again, Appreciation improves thinking.
Appreciation stabilizes the heart and stimulates thinking!
The above was taken from Nancy Kline’s new book “More time to think” ( More Time to Think: A Way of Being in the World), a book for coaches or anyone who wants to understand how active listening makes the other person smarter.
It’s also a great book for managers and team leaders who keep wondering why the people in their teams “just don’t think!”. It’s all about creating the right “thinking environment” for them…
People think better in the presence of Appreciation. And they stop thinking in the presence of criticism.
